Types of Hair Dyes Available

There are 5 types of hair dyes which are available in the market.

  • Permanent Hair Dyes – These hair dyes contain strong chemicals. They have a high concentration of peroxide which opens the hair shaft for the color to go deeper into the hair. Lasting for about 8 to 10 weeks permanent hair dyes can cause severe damage to the hair.

  • Semi Permanent Hair Dyes – The effect of these hair dyes last for about 6 weeks of time. However, they do not alter the natural shade of hair. But although they are comparatively temporary, they can still be damaging and will require continuous reapplied. Nevertheless, they are a better option than permanent hair dye. Moreover, they color hair cuticles without opening the hair shaft. They also comparatively contain lesser amount of peroxide.

  • Temporary Hair Dyes – If you intend to experiment with different hair colors, the best way to go about with is temporary hair dyes. These hair dyes only cover the surface of the hair and fade away the next time you rinse your hair.

  • Bleaching Hair – This is very useful when you want to lighten the natural color of your hair. By the process of oxidation it helps in removing color of hair. However, excessive bleaching will cause the color of hair to appear yellowish.

  • Ammonia-Free Hair Dyes – Composed of monoethanoloamine, ammonia-free hair dyes are less damaging. Excessive use of ammonia in hair dye will cause damage to hair.

Side Effects of Hair Dyes

Chemical ingredients within the hair dye can cause the following side effects.

  • Overexposure to Hair Dye – Most permanent hair dyes generally contain peroxide and ammonia. These chemicals strip the natural color of hair and expose them. As a result of regular use the chemicals can cause hair to lose luster, break easily and lead to hair loss as well.

  • Allergic Reactions to Hair Dye – Most hair dyes contain an allergen known as paraphenyldiamine. People having dermatitis can experience severe reactions due to this chemical. Moreover, people with psoriasis and eczema should also avoid this type of hair dyes. Paraphenyldiamine can also cause swelling, redness, itching and skin irritation as well.

  • Effects of Hair Dye on Pregnancy – The bad news is that coloring hair is not considered good for the baby when pregnant women use hair dye.

  • Hair Dyes Affect Asthma – Since hair dyes contain persulfates, they can aggravate asthma in some patients. Continuous inhalation of persulfates can cause lung inflammation, coughing and attacks of asthma as well.
